North Hennepin Community College (NHCC), located in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, faced significant challenges in preparing its dual enrollment students, known as PSEO (Post-Secondary Enrollment Options) students, for success. With nearly 1,200 PSEO students, NHCC serves a large and diverse student body, many of whom experience logistical barriers such as transportation issues that limit their ability to attend in-person orientation sessions. Additionally, the decentralized nature of dual enrollment support on campus meant that responsibilities were divided among multiple offices, leading to inefficiencies in onboarding and ensuring students were fully prepared for the expectations of college-level coursework. Recognizing the need for a more streamlined and accessible orientation process, NHCC sought a solution that would provide students with the necessary resources while improving institutional efficiency.
To address these challenges, NHCC developed and launched an online orientation specifically tailored for dual enrollment students. Transitioning from an outdated and cumbersome learning management system (LMS) to Go2Orientation, NHCC has significantly improved the accessibility, usability, and effectiveness of its orientation experience. The new platform allows for customized modules addressing the unique needs of PSEO students, including detailed guidance on course expectations, textbook access, and institutional policies. The online orientation is now a mandatory requirement before students can register for classes, ensuring they receive critical information before starting their coursework. Additionally, NHCC implemented a two-step process in which students complete the online orientation and then participate in a registration session with an academic advisor, further reinforcing their understanding of college expectations. This approach has led to a more seamless onboarding experience, reduced student confusion, and increased efficiency in tracking student progress, ultimately improving the overall success of NHCC’s dual enrollment program.
